During this season, they were managed by Mark Hateley and Warren Joyce who led them to 21st in the Third Division (League Two), narrowly avoiding crashing out of the Football League and facing bankruptcy, Joyce turned the season around in 1999 after beginning the year bottom of the league, leading the fans to remember the season as "The Great Escape".
