A Look Back on a Season of Highs & Lows
The 2023/24 season is nearing its end, and if you’re a fan of an EFL team then your season may have already ended. It’s been a season full of surprises, shocks and record-breaking. Whether your team over-achieved, under-achieved or performed exactly how you expected - this season has certainly been one we can look back on with plenty of discussion.
Premier League Evaluation
The 2023/24 Premier League season has had excitement from the very start with tight battles at both ends of the table. As we near the final stages, Sheffield United could be joined by either Burnley Luton or Nottingham Forest as this season’s relegated three - although it looks extremely unlikely for Burnley to claim survival.
This season has also been a record-breaking season for some clubs. Firstly, Bournemouth recorded their highest-ever points tally. This season has been the most ever goals scored in a 20-team season, the previous record was 1084 goals set last season. If you’re a Sheffield United fan, look away now - the Blades have had a record-breaking season for all the wrong reasons.
This season, Chris Wilder’s team have already conceded 100 goals, conceding 1 more goal this season will break the record for most goals conceded in a single season. They’ve also conceded the most premier league goals at home in a season, breaking the previous record. The Blades are also on track to break the worst goal difference in a season, previously set by Derby County at -69 - Sheffield United sit on -65 still with games to play. Despite all this, Derby’s lowest-ever point tally still stands as Sheffield United currently sit on 16 points - swings and roundabouts, Blades fans.
EFL Fairytales
One of the biggest stories to come out of English football this season was Kieran McKenna’s boys in blue. After gaining automatic promotion from League 1 last season, finishing 2 points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, the Tractor Boys won 9 of their first 10 Championship matches and secured back-to-back promotions - returning to the Premier League after 22 years and becoming the first club since Southampton in 2012 to gain back-to-back promotions from tier 3 to tier 1 of English Football.
Leicester City were crowned champions with Leeds and Southampton also up there - as expected following their relegations and calibre of players. The final play-off standings are Leeds United, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich.
Plymouth Argyle secured final-day survival with a 1-0 win over Hull, which sent Birmingham City to League 1. Rotherham United saw one of the worst Championship campaigns since the league was formed, finishing on 27 points, 24 points away from safety. The only team to ever perform worse than this Rotherham side was Blackpool’s 2014/2015 squad who finished on 26 points.
Celebrations Elsewhere
Ipswich weren’t the only team to secure back-to-back promotions this season as Wrexham continued their promotion party from last year, finishing second in League 2 after their storm of the National League last season. Stockport took the League Two trophy and will be joining the Hollywood-backed team in League One come August.
In League One, two former Championship giants marked their return the one of the most competitive leagues in the world. After a strong season, Portsmouth were crowned Champions with Derby County claiming the other automatic promotion spot.
